Crete

Finally, after ten months of routine, I went back to the hot and sunny beach. Together with my wife I spent 9 relaxing days on the island of Crete. I must admit, I enjoyed doing nothing and chilling at the beach for most of the time, just listening to music and reading books (I’m actually starting to like it…). Our Hotel, Alexander Beach, was a good choice and near Malia. (Rating including mine)

The majority of the guests were from Germany and Switzerland. It didn’t annoy us too much, because we spent most of our time outside the touristic place of Malia. We rented a scooter and a car for some days and drove around the island. We found nice little taverns which served us good and real local Cretan food. We also visited two archeological ruins as well. The one near Malia was pretty well maintained. The second one in Knossos was too commercial and not authentic anymore, a real disappointment.

We visited the city of Rethymno which had a good mix of Venetian and Turkish architecture. The market and the unique sweet-water lake in Aghios Nikolaos was a nice trip as well. Thanks to strong winds and pretty big waves in the north of the island we discovered a little piece of the south.

Overall the trip to Crete was nice. I was able to forget daily routines and to relax at the beach, getting a nice tan as well. Below you can check out some pictures and a file you can download using google earth to track our trip (so you can see where the pictures have been taken exactly).
